Food for special medical purposes.
Glycosade is a hydrothermally processed high amylopectin waxy modified cornstarch available in unflavoured variety.
Hepatic GSDs (or liver GSDs), are a group of conditions which affect the way the body uses carbohydrates. Hepatic GSDs include Types 1a, 1b, 3, 6, 9, 11, and 0 and require a special diet to be followed. People with HGSD can put glucose (a type of sugar) into their glycogen stores after eating but they are unable to take glucose from glycogen when needed. This can cause blood glucose levels to drop too low. This is called hypoglycaemia and can be very dangerous if left untreated. Uncooked cornstarch is useful for patients with HGSD as it takes the body a long time to break it down into glucose, helping to keep blood glucose levels steady. Glycosade is a modified cornstarch that has been proven to keep blood glucose levels in the normal range for longer when compared to uncooked cornstarch for those with HGSD.
Indications
Glycosade is for the dietary management of hepatic glycogen storage disease (HGSD) where the use of a long acting starch is indicated. Glycosade unflavoured is suitable from 2 years of age.
Dosage and Administration
To be determined by the clinician or dietitian and is dependent on the age, body weight and metabolic response of the patient. A fasting Glycosade load is recommended.
